Well, it’s been another two weeks, and what’s happened in the world of music?
Deftones Bassist Injured in Car Accident
Chi Cheng, the bassist of the Deftones, was involved in a car accident on Monday, and was taken to a hospital, in critical but stable condition. Today, singer Chino posted an update on the band’s blog, saying that his condition was the same, but also made an interesting statement:
During his recovery process, Chi’s mother has asked that each day we spread a little bit of good in his name. So each day Deftones will be posting what you can do to help Chi recover. Today, she has asked that you all remember to buckle your seat belts, and remind those you love to buckle up. By doing something so little in his name, you will be helping him find the strength to recover.
For those who don’t know, Deftones were about to release their sixth album, Eros, sometime this winter. It isn’t certain how this unfortunate event will affect this, but I doubt the band is really even occupied with that at this point. Anyway, here’s hoping for a quick and full recovery, Chi.
HPZ Playlist: 11/6
Incubus - “Nowhere Fast”: Until recently, I wasn’t much of a fan of Incubus. Imagine that. But if you pay attention to each album, you’ll notice that they change large elements of their style for each one. They’re also great musicians, and this song shows it.
John Lennon - “Instant Karma”: Listening to Lennon’s post-Beatles work, you’ll hear a lot of similarities to the music he made in his former band (mainly because he was arguably the larger half of Lennon/McCartney), but his personal style is a lot more distinctive in songs like these.
Isis - “In Fiction”: It’s a long one, but worth it if you have the attention span. The post-rock/metal scene is definitely worth checking out if you’re interested in hearing some guitar/bass/drums-based music that just throws the verse-chorus-verse structure out the window. The climax during the last few minutes of the song is just amazing.
Helmet - “Revenge Destroys Everything”: One of my favorite bands. They started in 1989 and helped bridge the musical worlds of indie and hard rock with their major label debut Meantime in 1992, influencing countless bands that unfortunately got more recognition than the band that started it all. They disbanded in 1997 and reformed in 2004, with guitarist/vocalist the only remaining original member. Although he was always the primary songwriter anyway. This is a single released for the comic-book film Tatua, and it’s a bit more exemplary of their more recent style.
Sunny Day Real Estate - “Seven”: The band that brought emo into the mainstream. Yes, emo was actually great when it started out. Some trivia: drummer William Goldsmith played for the Foo Fighters on their first tour, and bassist Nate Mendel still does.
Chevelle - “Point #1″: Some people say Pete Loeffler ripped off Maynard James Keenan’s vocal style. I agree, but at least he has good taste. Produced (or as he says, recorded) by Steve Albini for that indie cred.
